Lego gecko design using Mecabricks by Koneko and timtoolman

The incredible gecko continually surprises scientists. No, it’s not because of its popular insurance commercials. If you’ve ever seen a gecko running up walls or even ceilings, you too would be amazed by their anti-gravity skills. So what kind of superpowers do these small creatures hold within their feet? Looking deeper using an electron microscope, “researchers have found that the feet have very fine hairs (setae), about 1/10th of a millimetre long and packed 5,000 per square mm (three million per square inch). In turn, the end of each seta has about 400–1,000 branches ending in a spatula-like structure about 0.2–0.5 µm (microns—less than 1/50,000th inch) long.”1 Unlike your human fingers, which have much larger ridges by comparison, the setae of gecko feet create a seamless contact area with virtually any surface. Down to the molecular level, a force known as Van der Waal becomes strong enough for geckos to stick to glass. Scientists trying to build robotic geckos were further baffled when they realized that gecko feet are self-cleaning, like some kind of magical duct tape. Geckos make it look easy to defy gravity, not only sticking to surfaces, but they also instinctively pull their toes at just the right angle to get unstuck.

Scientists hope they can somehow build a robot of such worthy design. The ingenious Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen helped his father improve on Lego’s successful design by means of the tubes. Inside each Lego brick is a tube or set of tubes, spaced just right to help clutch the Lego bumps.2 They are still the most popular sticky-brick toys around. When God made us in HIs image, He put creativity inside us. And when we see His awesome design in creation, a deeper connection is made.

So how can you be a gecko, other than buying the green costume? It starts with understanding this: that the same Master Builder who designed the gecko put even more thought into designing you. While God made the gecko with the ability to stick to walls, God gave you the ability to stick to Him in a right relationship. If you haven’t already, pray the sinner’s prayer and receive Jesus into your heart. Like gravity, the natural forces of the world are set to bring you down, but God promises to put within us supernatural strength by His spirit. Even our own sin, like dirt on a gecko foot, is washed away by the work of the cross. Your sustained anti-grav power comes from reading the Bible and surrounding yourself with G.E.C.K.O.’s – Godly Encouraging Christian Keepin’-on Overcomers. One of my favorite Bible verses is a good one to memorize,

“And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.” Philippians 1:6 NLT

This verse encourages me to stick with God in perseverance, even when trials come, even when I trip up, because I know that God is working inside me to keep me faithful. It’s also soooo important to keep our focus directed towards God.

“No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it (perfection), but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” Philippians 3:13-14 NLT

Seems to me the Philippians needed some powerful encouragement for sticking with it. Amazingly, the apostle Paul penned the epistle from prison 2000 years ago. In that time, the Philippians were intensely pressured by those who worshiped the Roman emperor and other various gods. The verses in this epistle evidently have not lost their influential power! They can help you stick with God’s plan. Find more verses about perseverance here: persevere.
